Police in Colombia have used exorcisms and prayers to fight crime, including drug cartel leader Pablo Escobar, Colombian Police Chief Gen. Henry Sanabria told Digital Journal on March 26.
Henry Sanabria said that religious practices have helped the police during the last 50 years of armed conflict in the South American country.
As examples, he cited the police operations that killed Escobar (in 1993), the FARC guerrilla leader Alfonso Cano (2011) and his military commander known as “Mono Jojoy” (2010).
“The existence of the devil is certain. I saw it. I felt it”said Sanabria, crossing himself at every mention of the devil.
Sanabria affirmed that the perpetrators used witchcraft and said that in an operation, a policeman managed to kill one of them, “praying while you shoot”.
The general’s statements generated a fierce debate on Colombian social networks.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro did not express concern. “We know the general’s beliefs, but we try not to let those beliefs affect the rules, everything is simple”Gustavo Petro said. — “I think he respected them, as far as we know”.
