Greek police have detained two terrorist suspects who were planning attacks in the country to cause mass casualties.
The suspects are believed to be part of a foreign terrorist network and are being held at police headquarters in central Athens, officials said on Tuesday.
The arrest operation involved the Greek Anti-Terrorist Unit and the National Intelligence Service, assisted by a foreign intelligence service, who was not identified by the Greek authorities.
Police said the suspects had chosen a target of “high symbolic value” and were last preparing to attack.
“Their goal was not only to cause the death of innocent citizens, but also to undermine the feeling of security in the country by damaging state institutions and endangering international relations,” the Greek police said in a statement.
