A seminar titled “Bomb and Mine Relief for Peace and Sustainable Development: Sharing Regional Experiences and Achievements in Mine Action” was held in Hanoi on March 29, according to the Communist Party of Vietnam website.
The event was organized by the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Speaking at the event, Vice Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet stressed that almost one fifth of Vietnam’s territory (about 5.6 million hectares) is still contaminated with bombs and mines left over from the war.
For this reason, he said, demining remains one of Viet Nam’s top priorities and is an integral part of the overall process of reconstruction and post-conflict reconstruction, peacebuilding and realizing the sustainable development goals.
Let’s remember that the Vietnam War of 1964-1975 was one of the most important events of the 20th century in Southeast Asia. Ho Chi Minh’s communist Vietnam defeated the US and its allies, and the US side lost about 50 thousand dead, more than 150 thousand wounded. As for the Vietnamese, they lost more than one and a half million people during the war.
