The Portuguese government has established a working group to develop a national strategy for the protection of crime victims within six months, the republic’s Ministry of Justice said in a press release on March 31.
The group will have to develop methods “comprehensive response and interdisciplinary support to victims” each category of violent crime. The Portuguese Ministry of Justice emphasized the need “adopt a comprehensive approach to the protection of victims of violence, protecting the rights of the most vulnerable” and develop an action plan for each of the categories between 2024 and 2028.
The ministry noted that “the needs of crime victims in Portugal are not limited to responding to the phenomena of gender violence and domestic violence”, “violence against the elderly and children cannot be reduced to domestic violence or considered solely in the context of domestic violence”.
The group was made up of representatives of various authorities, the Attorney General’s Office, the Commission for the Protection of Crime Victims, non-governmental organizations that support crime victims, and representatives of the scientific community.
