Some 250,000 Palestinian Muslims celebrated their Eid prayer at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, WAFA reported on March 31.
The second Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has become a day of mass pilgrimage for Palestinians to Israeli-controlled Jerusalem, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex.
The massive visit to the holy site in Ramadan coincides with the introduction by the Israeli authorities of severe restrictions on the entry of Palestinians from the West Bank. At the same time, only people over the age of 55 and under the age of 12 are allowed to enter Jerusalem through the Israeli checkpoints that separate the holy city from the West Bank.
Temporary Israeli checkpoints have also been set up at the entrances to the Old City of Jerusalem, where the mosque is located.
Other Palestinians denied entry to the city prayed at Israeli checkpoints in the West Bank to protest being prevented from entering the holy city, WAFA reported.
