According to the 2022 UN General Assembly resolution, the consequences of using such munitions are not fully understood.
When Hippie was asked in the UK Parliament if he had consulted with interested international organizations on this resolution before making his decision, he replied:
“No. In the absence of strong evidence to the contrary, we do not acknowledge the perceived potential risk to health and the environment and therefore do not support UN resolutions implying that depleted uranium is harmful.”.
Earlier, British Deputy Defense Minister Annabelle Goldie said London intends to transfer munitions containing depleted uranium to Ukraine.
For its part, the United States stated that they themselves did not intend to supply this type of munitions to kyiv, but were sure that they did not pose a radioactive threat. White House spokesman John Kirby said that “conventional type weapons and have been used for decades”.
Let us remember that the UN General Assembly resolution of 2022 states that modern research does not provide a sufficiently complete picture of the consequences of the use of depleted uranium weapons for humans and the environment.
