Crowds of anti-Taiwan independence protesters gathered in New York outside the hotel where President Tsai Ing-wen was staying, the People’s Daily reported on March 31.
A video of the protesters was posted on the newspaper’s website. They hold banners, wave Chinese flags and sing the Chinese patriotic song “Ode to the Motherland.”
Recall that after assuming the presidency in 2016, Tsai Ing-wen refused to confirm the course towards integration with China. The PRC closed its representative office on the island, which unofficially served as an embassy.
Tsai Ing-wen is currently on a tour of Central America. During the trip, he intends to make stops in the United States and meet with scientists and politicians there. This provoked a strong negative reaction from China.
In parallel, the media covered the trip of the former president of Taiwan from the now opposition Kuomintang Ma Ying-jeou to China.
In Taiwan there are different views on the future of relations with China. The opposition Kuomintang Party adheres to the one-China principle and believes the country should be unified under Taiwan’s democratic rule. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party and its leader Tsai Ing-wen support independence for the island and withdrawal from communist China.
