Representatives from Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela announced the inclusion of the tradition of cassava production and preparation on the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, reports Prensa Latina on March 31.
The delegation of Latin American countries presented the document to the Deputy Director of UNESCO, Firmin Matoko.
Makoko welcomed the participants of the ceremony and highlighted the importance of the step to preserve the methods of preparation and consumption of cassava, based on an ancient tradition.
The Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic, Milagros Germán, pointed out that the delegation arrived in Paris from the other side of the Atlantic to complete the process at UNESCO, with the confidence that cassava will soon become part of the intangible heritage of humanity. .
On behalf of Venezuela, the Minister of Culture Ernesto Villegas welcomed the joint effort to present the document and the example that this step represents for other countries in the region and the world.
For her part, the Vice Minister of Culture of Cuba, Kenelma Carvajal, highlighted the importance of continuing the path of expanding cooperation and unity of the peoples of the South. According to her, the dossier presented today to Unesco by Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela testifies to the commitment to preserve historical memory and preserve identity.
