Tesla CEO and owner Elon Musk will travel to China in April to be able to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Reuters reported.
Shanghai is home to Tesla’s largest factory, and China is the second largest market for electric vehicles, behind only the United States. Sources close to Elon Musk told Reuters that they do not know what topics will be discussed at this meeting.
Musk’s planned visit comes as China tries to attract more foreign investment to help prop up an economy that has been hit by three years of Covid-19 lockdowns. Li Qiang is constantly negotiating and doing business with companies such as Apple or Pfizer.
ABOUT Financial Times says it was Li Qiang who convinced the founder of the electric car company to choose China to install Tesla’s first factory outside of US soil.
The brand’s vehicles were recently banned from entering Chinese military installations and political gathering places due to concerns about cameras being installed on them. The company is awaiting permission from Beijing for the free circulation of cars in the country.
If the meeting takes place, it won’t be the first meeting between Musk and Qiang. Elon Musk met the current Chinese prime minister during a visit to China in 2018, when a decree was signed to build Tesla’s largest factory in Shanghai.
