Police were attacked by demonstrators during this Saturday’s housing rights protests in Lisbon’s Martim Moniz. The clashes followed a parade demonstration between Alameda and Praça do Martim Moniz, in which two demonstrators damaged several commercial establishments by painting walls and shop windows.
Near Martim Moniz Square, protesters who caused damage during the parade were approached by a PSP for identification. According to a PSP press release, “the approaching police officers were surrounded and attacked through physical aggression, direct contact, throwing stones and glass bottles, so they decided to enter the supermarket to protect themselves, and two protesters approached.” Therefore, the agents had to call for reinforcements where they set up a security perimeter around the supermarket.
The statement said that after the attacks, one of the police officers was injured in the face, while another was left with “several pains in the limbs” after being hit with bottles. Two motorcycles and two police cars were also damaged.
