Chinese authorities congratulated Riyadh on Saudi Arabia’s entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a dialogue partner, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on April 2.
The day before, Chinese President Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. During the conversation, he suggested even more active interaction between the countries and the creation of a Sino-Arab partnership with a common destiny.
“China congratulates Saudi Arabia on becoming a dialogue partner with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with Saudi Arabia under the SCO, make greater contributions to maintaining regional security and stability, and promoting common development.”– said the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.
On April 1, it became known that Riyadh joined the SCO as a partner.
The SCO was established in 2001. Its members are Russia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka are considered observer countries.
In autumn 2022, at the Samarkand summit, partnership memoranda in dialogue with Qatar and Egypt were signed. The procedure for granting partner status to Kuwait, Maldives, Bahrain, Myanmar and the United Arab Emirates was also launched.
