A magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred 33 km southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Volcano Discovery reports on April 3.
The earthquake occurred at an average depth of 105.6 km, on the early morning of Monday, April 3, 2023, at 3:06 p.m. local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake may be revised in the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies release their reports.
The Volcano Discovery monitoring service has found a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), which also lists a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the RaspberryShake civil seismograph network with a magnitude 6.5, the Joint Research Institutes for Seismology (IRIS) with a magnitude 6.5, and the German Research Center for Geosciences ( GFZ) with a magnitude of 6.6.
As a general rule, earthquakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency, and results can vary, with reports after the first often showing greater accuracy.
