The temporary shutdown of mobile and fixed networks in several prefectures in Japan was declared by regional cellular providers Nippon Telephone Telegraph on April 3, Kyodo News reports.
Due to the failure, the mobile Internet access service, as well as fixed IP telephony, stopped working. According to NTT East and NTT West, the operation was restored within a few hours.
To find out the reasons for the failure, the Ministry of the Interior and Communications sent specialists to the companies.
The incident occurred at 7 am (1 am Moscow time) on the first business day of the new fiscal year. The outage also affected NTT Docomo and SoftBank, which use NTT’s fiber optic links.
According to a statement from NTT East, at 7:10 am there were network problems affecting subscribers in Tokyo, near Kanagawa prefecture, as well as on the northern island of Hokkaido. At the same time, working capacity was restored at about 10 am (4 am Moscow time).
During the outage, customers were unable to make emergency calls via landlines and therefore had to use mobile or public phones.
The NTT West outage affected Osaka, Ishikawa and Ehime prefectures. However, according to this regional company, the specialists managed to restore work in about an hour and a half.
Let’s remember that in the last two years in Japan there have been several important failures that have affected mobile operators. In particular, KDDI and NTT Docomo temporarily stopped serving subscribers.
KDDI subscribers in the summer of 2022 were unable to use mobile services for more than three days. Then, according to the official version, due to an error in the update of the operator’s equipment, the load on the network increased significantly, which led to a subsequent massive failure.
In autumn 2021, it took more than a day for NTT Docomo to resolve the incident. The Ministry of the Interior and Communications ordered the company to improve the quality of the services it provides.
