Japan to lift border restrictions due to COVID-19 from May 8

Japan to lift border restrictions due to COVID-19 from May 8

The country’s government will remove entry restrictions to Japan, introduced in connection with the risk of spreading coronavirus infection, along with a change in the danger class of the disease, Kyodo News reports on April 3.

The government plans to move COVID-19 from the second to the lowest fifth infectious disease danger level starting May 8. The current entry restrictions are expected to be replaced by a series of voluntary procedures.

Starting May 8, the government is expected to introduce a genomic surveillance program under which everyone arriving in the country will voluntarily be tested for new infectious diseases.

The country’s largest international airports, Narita, Haneda, Chubu, Kansai and Fukuoka, will operate under the new rules.

Under current regulations, travelers from mainland China must present a recent certificate (not older than 72 hours) of having been tested for the presence of coronavirus infection. As part of the new restriction option, Chinese visitors will be randomly screened by the Japanese authorities.
