The movement of trains on the route, where there was a disaster in February that claimed the lives of 57 people, will slow down on Greece’s railways, Reuters reported on April 3.
The disaster occurred on February 28 near the city of Larisa in the Athens – Thessaloniki post. Rail traffic was suspended and resumed only at the end of March. On April 3, communication between Athens and Thessaloniki began.
According to Transport Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis, state owner of OSE Greek Railways and private rail operator Hellenic Train “exceeded his own limits” to ensure traffic safety.
In addition, according to him, the authorities are “great effort”complete by September a new signaling and control system for the 2,500 km of Greek railways. It is alleged that, in particular, attention was paid to tasks such as mobile communication with drivers, as well as lighting in tunnels.
Let us remember that the catastrophe provoked massive protests, and the rating of the ruling party decreased and came closer to the rating of the opposition.
