The head of the Libyan parliament urged to speed up the development of laws on elections

The head of the Libyan parliament urged to speed up the development of laws on elections

The speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, held a meeting with the members of the 6+6 committee on April 3, reports the Libyan channel The Libya Observer.

The head of the Libyan Parliament met with members of the 6+6 Committee, which was formed jointly with the country’s Supreme Council of State. The committee included six representatives of the Libyan Parliament and six representatives of the country’s Supreme Council of State. The committee was formed to agree on the legal framework for the upcoming elections in Libya.

Aguila Saleh called on all members of the 6+6 Committee to speed up the work on the formation of a legislative framework for the upcoming elections in Libya.

Let us remember that the last large-scale hostilities in Libya ceased in the summer of 2020. On October 23, 2020, a ceasefire agreement was signed in Geneva. The agreement provided for the holding of unified elections in the country on December 24, 2021, the creation of a unified interim government for this period, the creation of a unified army and the withdrawal of all foreign forces.

As a result of the forum in Geneva, Abdel Hamid Dbeiba became head of the Libyan Interim Government of National Unity, but was unable to organize the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 24, 2021, and also violated his promise not to run for office. the Libyan presidency.

On February 10, 2022, the Libyan Parliament elected Fathi Bashaga as the new Prime Minister of the Libyan Interim Government, who was supposed to replace the head of the Interim Government of National Unity Abdel Hamid Dbeiba.

Dbeiba refuses to step down as prime minister and, relying on armed groups loyal to him, continues to occupy the country’s capital, Tripoli.

The presence of two parallel governments in the country has led Libya into a political impasse, from which the Libyan Supreme Council of State and the country’s parliament are trying to find a way out.
