Brazilian volleyball player Wallace de Souza, Rio 2016 Olympic champion, has been suspended for one year by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) for insulting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The COB Ethics Council unanimously decided to suspend 37-year-old Souza for “unethical action and advocating and inciting violence” on social media.
The opposite of Cruzeiro, an avowed supporter of former President Jair Bolsonaro, was suspended on January 31 after he conducted a poll on his Instagram page in which he asked if Lula deserved to be shot in the face.
Penalized for 90 days in domestic competition, Wallace de Souza will only be able to return to action on May 3rd.
At the election level, opposite faces, then a year of suspension.
Wallace de Souza had already retired from the Brazil national team after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but agreed to return to compete in last year’s World Cup.
