The American company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will allocate about $8.9 billion (705 billion rubles) to resolve the dispute over its products, the company’s press service reports on April 4.
More than 38,000 lawsuits have been filed against J&J by dissatisfied consumers. The firm was accused of the fact that its products, namely baby powder, contain talc, which contains asbestos, which can cause cancer.
Amid multiple investigations accusing J&J of deliberately withholding information, the company has stopped making baby powder in the United States and Canada.
The J&J LTL Management subsidiary filed its first bankruptcy filing in January 2023 to reorganize production and resolve the dispute. In April, the firm filed a new application. J&J will allocate $8.9 billion (705 billion rubles) for this.
While J&J plans to replace baby powder with a similar one made from cornstarch in 2023, J&J denies all of the claims. The press release repeatedly states that the allegations “have no scientific basis” and that the company pleads not guilty.
