Germany’s Federal Cartel Supervisory Authority has intensified its supervision of Apple’s operations, writes the Berliner Zeitung on April 5.
Following Google, Facebook (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) and Amazon, Germany’s Federal Antimonopoly Office began closely monitoring the Apple technology group. Company based in Cupertino, California “occupies a position of economic power in all markets”explained department head Andreas Mundt.
For this reason, Apple has been under so-called extended abuse controls. Mundt emphasized the special interaction of various Apple products, such as the iPhone, the iOS operating system and the App Store.
This is how the group manages “a comprehensive digital ecosystem that is of great importance for competition not only in Germany, but also in Europe and worldwide.” Anti-competitive practices in the future “appear” and, where appropriate, be prevented.
Since the beginning of 2021, new antitrust laws have been in force in Germany. In case of violations by large digital corporations, the control authorities can intervene earlier in their activities and prohibit practices that threaten competition.
Earlier, the German antitrust service had already launched an investigation against the American company Google and its parent company Alphabet. The agency also restricted Facebook (a banned organization in the Russian Federation) from collecting user data from various sources.
