Egg prices in the European Union have increased considerably in recent months and have become on average 31.1% more expensive in February of this year than in February of last year, according to the Dutch portal Nieuwe Oogst on the 5th of April.
Industry experts point out that the price of eggs at the beginning of 2023 is historically high. This is mainly due to the sharp increase in the cost of chicken feed. The supply of eggs is lower due to bird flu, which also affects the price.
In general, the entire basket of the purchase of the European consumer has increased in price, but less quickly than the eggs. In February, food prices were 18.4% higher than a year earlier.
Analysts point out that there are large differences in the price of eggs between European countries. In the Czech Republic, eggs have become more than 95% more expensive, in Hungary and Slovakia prices have risen by almost 80%.
In Cyprus, egg prices increased at a much slower rate, rising by less than 14% in one year. In European countries outside the EU, the increase in egg prices was the smallest in Norway (8.2%).
In the US, egg prices also rose sharply last year. In February, US residents paid 55.4% more for eggs than they did a year earlier. At the same time, the prices of all food and beverages grew at a much slower rate (10.2%). Last year, the United States was affected by the largest outbreak of bird flu to date.
