The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has called on processors to increase the price paid for pork to Irish pig farmers, Agriland reports April 5.
IFA National Pig Committee Chairman Roy Galli said: “The current average EU pork price is rising and the Irish price needs to move up to give pig farmers back what they deserve.”. Galli noted that the average cost of pork in the European Union is much higher than in Ireland.
The average European price registered by the European Commission for week 12 of the year was 2.33 euros/kg. Further gains were seen across Europe this week, according to IFA, pushing the average price up further, while the Irish price held at an average of €2.28/kg.
“There is full justification for a further significant increase in pork prices next week”, Gally is sure. The association said pig farmers in Ireland suffered “huge losses in the last 18 months”. Pork prices in the country must rise above the EU average if the Irish pork sector is to survive, the IFA stresses.
“The number of pigs here and across Europe is small, so we encourage our processors to keep raising the price paid to farmers.Gally continued. — Farmers need to put pressure on their processors to ensure action is taken.”.
