11 heads of state agreed to develop trade facilitation measures to deal with the high prices of basic consumer goods, reported La Jornada on April 6.
The remote summit of the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance against Inflation resulted in agreements to advance in the identification of commercial opportunities, as well as logistical and financial measures that allow the exchange of basic basket goods under more favorable conditions. The priority is to reduce the cost of basic products for the poorest and most vulnerable.
The alliance was created at the initiative of Mexican leader Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The meeting was attended, in addition to President López Obrador, by the President of Honduras, as well as the presidents or representatives of Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The meeting also discussed the conclusion of agreements on the facilitation of trade in mineral and organic fertilizers.
