More than 3,000 illegal immigrants who have served their sentences are still in Tanzanian prisons awaiting deportation, according to the Comptroller and Auditor General’s annual report, writes the Tanzanian Daily News on April 6.
“During the audit, I found that there are 4,419 illegal immigrants from different countries in the Department of Penitentiary Service, of which 1,264 are still serving sentences, 45 are under investigation, and 3,110 have been deported”— Comptroller General and Auditor Charles Kichere told reporters in Dodoma.
“The presence of deportees who have served their prison sentence but are still in prison for one to five years is due to the fact that the Ministry of the Interior did not issue an order for their release”He explained.
The Minister of the Interior has issued arrest warrants for migrants who are to be deported. However, deportation is a diplomatic matter that requires consultation with the ambassadors.
The Comptroller General urges the Department of the Penitentiary Service and the Department of Migration to take the necessary measures to deport illegal immigrants who have completed their sentences in order to avoid additional costs.
