The meeting between China’s Taiwan region leader Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is another provocative move by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leaders of Taiwan to further collude with the US in pursuit of independence, Xinhua wrote in an editorial on April 7.
Citing a series of facts to prove that Taiwan belongs to China, Xinhua reminded that although the reunification of both sides of the Taiwan Strait has not yet taken place, the fact that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China has never changed. China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity cannot be questioned. The one-China principle represents the universal consensus of the international community; corresponds to the basic norms of international relations. To date, 182 countries, including the United States, have established diplomatic relations with the PRC on the basis of the one-China principle.
Tsai Ing-wen and the DPP leadership constantly increased so-called “military spending” by buying US weapons with Taiwan tax money, diligently carried out what the US said, and invited US politicians to visit Taiwan. These actions demonstrate the DPP’s stance on “Taiwan independence” and push Taiwan further and further into a dangerous abyss, Xinhua writes.
However, the great achievements of four decades of reform, opening-up and modernization have had a profound impact on the historic process of resolving the Taiwan issue and realizing full national reunification. Whatever political party or group is in power in Taiwan cannot change the course of cross-strait relations or the trend towards national reunification.
A spokesman for the Taiwan Workers’ Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee strongly condemned the provocative move and vowed to take strict measures to punish separatist forces seeking “Taiwan independence.”
