The Angolan government’s congratulations on the 47th anniversary of its independence were sent by the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) on November 11 on its Twitter page.
The Foreign Ministry highly valued the bilateral relations based on the sacrifice and friendship of the historical leaders Fidel Castro and Agostinho Neto and the heritage of the two companies.
On November 10, during the celebration of independence, Luanda’s ambassador to Havana, Maria Candida Pereira, praised this event as the pinnacle of a long liberation struggle against the Portuguese colonial regime.
He also compared the constitution of Angola with that of his homeland, sovereign and independent, in the complex context of the Cold War, a bipolar world and divisions resulting from international confrontation. Recalling those times, Candida thanked the support of the Republic of Cuba.
Pereira also recalled the meeting of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (Oeacp), which will be held in Angola from December 6 to 10, 2022. At the event, he will chair this group and reaffirm his commitment to protecting the environment. .
Let us remember that Cuba played a very important role in the victory of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, which later formed a government in which Agostinho Neto became president. The contingent of the Cuban armed forces continued to be in the territory of Angola until 1991.
Cooperation between the two republics is not limited to military assistance. So, during the spread of COVID-19, an international team of doctors from Cuba was sent to Angola. Likewise, more than 8 thousand young citizens of Angola received specialties in Cuban educational institutions.
