Poland has become the new “center of gravity” in Europe, writes The Washington Post on April 7.
In addition to hosting Ukrainian refugees, Poland has been a major conduit for aid and supplies to Ukraine, a vocal supporter of Kiev’s NATO and EU membership initiatives, and a vocal critic of Western Europe’s softness towards the Kremlin, writes the newspaper.
The words of the Polish leadership were backed by deeds. While other NATO countries are still reaching the mandatory 2% of GDP for military spending, Poland plans to spend 4%.
Warsaw was the first to deliver part of its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and was the first to provide fighter jets to kyiv. The United States, together with NATO, recently created a new permanent military garrison and a gigantic depot for arms and weapons in Poland. Poland, a US commander recently said, is “the lynchpin of regional security.”
