Aurelio Machado, mayor of Ribaue municipality in Nampula province in northern Mozambique, died Sunday after being hit by a car, local authorities said.
Nampula provincial government spokeswoman Jessie Karangesa told private channel STV that Machado died after two weeks of hospitalization after being hit by a car.
The mayor was taken in a coma to Nampula Central Hospital, where he eventually died.
Aurelio Machado was a member of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party, and was elected Mayor of Ribaue in 2018.
Aurelio Machado will be replaced by Deputy Frelimo in this municipality.
Mozambique has a high rate of traffic accidents and has been ranked by several reports as one of the most dangerous countries for pedestrians and motorists in Africa.
