The UN expects India to overtake China as the most populous country in the world later this month.
American base Pew Research Center, China has been the country with the largest number of inhabitants in the world since 1950, when the United Nations began keeping records of the population. However, while China’s population is shrinking, India’s population continues to grow.
India’s population could top 1.5 billion by the end of the decade, and continue to slowly grow until 2064, when it is estimated to peak at 1.7 billion, according to the UN’s “medium option” forecast.
According to the same source, people under 25 make up over 40% of India’s population, and roughly one in five people in the world under 25 live in the country.
