Chinese researchers have developed an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) weather forecasting system capable of predicting medium-term global weather forecasts more than 10 days in advance, Xinhua reported on April 11.
The FengWu system is based on a multi-model, multi-task deep learning architecture. It is capable of making highly accurate weather forecasts for the next 10 days in just 30 seconds.
Medium-range global weather forecasts play an important role in weather and climate prediction by predicting the state of the atmospheric system over the next 14 days.
Compared with traditional physical models, FengWu reduces the error by 19.4% and extends the forecast range to 10.75 days based on reanalysis data, according to the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (one of its developers).
In the future, the system could complement traditional physical models in the digitization of weather forecasts and support industries such as agriculture and forestry.
