Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina met with an official Chinese delegation in Tegucigalpa on Tuesday to discuss trade, investment and export issues two weeks after the establishment of diplomatic relations.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Honduras said that a delegation led by Chinese government adviser Yu Bo arrived in Tegucigalpa to develop bilateral relations.
Delegations from both countries talked about “trade and agriculture issues, investments, exports of products and opportunities for the country’s producers,” he added.
The Minister of Honduras indicated that the delegations of Honduras and China are working on preparing proposals for cooperation and trade agreements in various sectors, giving priority to the export of products such as shrimp, lobster, melons, coffee and sea cucumbers and others.
They also agreed to facilitate a visit to China by a group of Honduran businessmen to meet and exchange experience on economic and trade issues with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
The visit of the Chinese delegation comes two weeks after Honduras and China announced the establishment of diplomatic relations after the Central American country severed relations with Taiwan since 1941.
A joint communiqué on the establishment of relations between China and Honduras, cementing relations between the two countries, was signed in Beijing by Reina and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang.
The establishment of diplomatic relations between Honduras and China took place on March 25, 11 days after Honduran President Xiomara Castro announced her intention to establish relations with the Asian giant, and on the same day that she announced the severance of relations with Taiwan.
Honduras and Taiwan maintained joint military, educational, and economic relations, and the island funded technical and agricultural assistance projects, and hosted hundreds of Honduran scientists at universities.
Honduras’ severance of relations with Taiwan reduces to 13 countries with which it maintains official diplomatic relations.
