The Portuguese man suspected of stealing the campaign headquarters of Democratic nominee Katie Hobbs for governor of Arizona is an illegal immigrant and is wanted by US immigration authorities, official sources told Lusa on Monday.
The U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told Lusa that the suspect is a Portuguese citizen who entered the country as a registered student in 2018 and is now violating “the conditions of his admission.”
“ICE is looking for Daniel Mot, a Portuguese citizen who is currently on the run for administrative immigration violations due to being unable to maintain his student status at an academic institution. The ICE task force in Phoenix is trying to find Mot,” he said. .
Mota dos Reis came to the attention of US immigration authorities after he was arrested by police in Phoenix, Arizona on October 27 on suspicion of robbing the campaign headquarters of Katie Hobbs.
The Portuguese will bring with them computer equipment, such as a computer, keyboard and camera.
The Arizona Democratic Party attempted to link the robbery to a political “scare tactic,” but police did not indicate whether the crime was politically motivated.
However, despite being detained, the man was released on bail before ICE issued a warrant for his arrest, a source in the agency told Lusa.
“ICE staff conducted a background check and found that Mota entered the US in 2018 as a nonimmigrant and violated the terms of his entry. (…) An ICE agent found additional evidence that identified the person as violating your immigration status. ” added the Department of Immigration and Customs.
In the US press, Daniel Mota dos Reis was presented as a 36-year-old Angolan citizen, based on information on his Facebook page, where he says that he is from Luanda and that he attended high school in Loures, Portugal.
However, ICE clarified to Luce that the fugitive was a “Portuguese citizen”.
Also on the same social network, Daniel Mota dos Reis indicates that he worked for the oil company TotalEnergies in Angola for several years, having moved to the US in 2018.
