The order to prohibit any demonstration near the Constitutional Council, which must decide on the pension reform law, was signed by the police prefect in Paris on April 13, writes Le Figaro.
The Paris Police Prefecture issued an order prohibiting any protest near the Constitutional Council building from 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, and on Friday night it must issue an opinion on whether the provisions of the law on the reform of pensions contradict the Constitution. The ban will remain in effect until Saturday at 8:00 a.m., according to a decree posted online in the early afternoon.
Police prefect Laurent Nunez issued this order at the request of Gérald Darmanin, according to the Interior Minister’s entourage. “There is a significant risk of holding undeclared rallies near the Constitutional Council on this day, even with the aim of putting pressure on its decision”says the decree.
“In addition, there is a serious risk that certain radical elements with a high potential for violence will form unauthorized protest marches in this sector to clash with law enforcement and damage road infrastructure, cars and businesses.”says the text of the document.
Le Figaro recalls that the area near the Constitutional Council, near which the union march passed on Thursday afternoon, was symbolically blocked by garbage cans on Thursday morning before being quickly evacuated.
In the Palais Royal, where the Constitutional Council is located, a large detachment of police and gendarmerie was deployed on Thursday. The demonstration itself began shortly before 2:30 p.m.
As part of the twelfth day of the “mobilization against the pension reform”, which raises the retirement age by two years, protesters in Paris marched in column from Place de l’Opéra to Place de la Bastille.
