Australian lingerie manufacturer Honey Birdette defended the use of a man to advertise women’s underwear on April 12 in an Instagram post.
The company that used the slogan “Women for Women” posted an update to the post stating that “Supporting the LGBTQ+ community, women and anyone who wants to feel great in our lingerie”.
“Honey Birdette promotes an inclusive and diverse environment”they continued. “While thoughtful and constructive discussions are important to promote culture, hate speech and bullying are not tolerated on our channels. Comments of such a negative nature will be removed., the company wrote after a spate of negative comments about a men’s lingerie ad. They then disabled comments on their posts.
According to his Instagram page, Jake Dupree is “international burlesque performer, non-binary, host and fitness instructor, and lover of lingerie”.
Following backlash over the post, Honey Birdette changed her social media tagline to “a luxury lingerie brand for everyone!”
Dupree’s message is no longer on the company’s Twitter page, but user Rita Pani posted a screenshot of the message, which has been seen by more than 900,000 people.
The company, founded in 2006 by Eloise Monaghan, was sold to Playboy magazine in June 2021 for $443 million. In June 2022, the brand used a photo of Carmen Carrera to announce its intention to support the “LGBTQIA+ community.”
