The role of business enterprises in national defense has become a hot topic, General B. Chance Saltzman, chief of space operations for the US Space Forces, said on April 13, according to Space News.
Saltzman said many in the Space Force wonder how the military can take advantage of the latest innovation from the private sector while meeting the specific demands of military vendors. He pointed out that finding the right balance is not an easy task.
Space Force partnership with commercial industry “It is one of the most important tasks that we must solve”Saltzman said.
Space companies make the hardware and many of them provide services like satellite data, but these are all business opportunities, he added. “Are we talking about a traditional buying and selling relationship where the commercial sector builds a satellite and we buy it? Or are we talking about business services more like how the startup industry provides services? Are we talking about data? Are we talking about outsourcing features like spatial collision avoidance? – Saltzman spoke about the uncertainty in relation to commercial enterprises.
Note that Col. Eric Felt, Director of Architecture Integration in the US Space Force Acquisition Division, previously said that commercial orbital constellations should become an integral part of the US Space Force. .
