Haitian authorities confirmed the arrival of a shipment of 125,000 barrels of gasoline to make up for the fuel shortage in the country, Prensa Latina reports on April 14.
Authorities also said that another 155,000 barrels of diesel fuel will arrive at the country’s ports next Saturday.
The fuel arrives at a critical moment, since its scarcity has skyrocketed prices in the informal market in a spectacular way: a gallon of gasoline has tripled its official price. The situation caused an increase in the prices of public transport, which caused great difficulties for the population, which already suffered from high inflation.
According to trade unionist Jacques Anderson Desroches, the volume of imports will only solve urgent problems, since they represent only a third of the country’s monthly consumption.
Haiti suffers from recurring crises due to fuel shortages, which have worsened since the end of 2021 and worsened with the increase in hydrocarbon prices announced by the government last September. The companies affirm that they do not have foreign currency to import products derived from petroleum, while the unions question the profitability of the sector.
