Eight men and three women were charged by the GNR on suspicion of stealing the cork, with authorities seizing 2,800 kg of cork in the municipality of Nisa (Portalegre), security forces said this Friday.
A statement from the GNR Territorial Command of Portalegre explains that the suspects, aged between 22 and 62, were prosecuted on Wednesday in the city of Montalvao, municipality of Nisa.
According to the GNR, after a complaint about the theft of the cork, the guards drove to the site, where they discovered that the suspects had taken the cork without the owner’s legal permission.
“During police investigations, the Guards managed to intercept five vehicles carrying cork, followed by 11 suspects who fled the scene of the theft,” the report said.
In addition to 2,800 kg of cork, GNR also confiscated five vehicles, 10 cork axes and eight pairs of work gloves.
The suspects became defendants, and the facts were submitted to the Portalegre court.
