Brazil’s president this Sunday proposed joint mediation with China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the war between Russia and Ukraine, an issue he said was discussed in Beijing and Abu Dhabi.
Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, who ended his visit to the UAE this Sunday after visiting China, also confirmed accusations against the United States of America (US) and the European Union (EU) of prolonging the war.
The war was provoked by “decisions taken by two countries”, Russia and Ukraine, Lula da Silva said at a press conference in Abu Dhabi that ended his visit to the UAE, French AFP news agency quoted.
Lula da Silva expressed his hope that China, the UAE and other countries will join the “political G20” to try to end the war provoked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
“President Putin is showing no initiative to end the war; [o Presidente Volodymyr] The Ukrainian Zelensky is showing no initiative to end the war,” the Brazilian leader said through an official interpreter.
“Europe and the US continue to contribute to the continuation of the war. So they should sit down at the table and say: “Enough”,” he said.
In China, Brazil’s president accused Washington of “promoting war” in Ukraine.
Lula da Silva said he had proposed to UAE Presidents Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and China’s Xi Jinping to create a group of countries entrusted with a mediation mission.
“Big Twenty [foi] created to save the economy [mundial]which was in crisis,” he said.
“Now it is important to create a different type of G20 in order to end this war and establish peace. This is my intention and I think we will succeed,” he said.
Lula da Silva also said that he had already discussed the initiative with US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and South American leaders.
The Brazilian president arrived in the UAE on Saturday after a two-day visit to China during which he signed agreements worth US$10 billion (more than €9 billion).
Lula da Silva, who returned to power in January after serving two terms from 2003 to 2010, said in Beijing that Brazil is back on the international stage and hopes to mediate Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Unlike other countries, China and Brazil have never imposed financial sanctions on Russia and are trying to position themselves as intermediaries.
The UAE has also taken a neutral stance on the conflict, attracting a large number of Russian businessmen fleeing Western sanctions, especially in Dubai, a major financial center.
The wealthy Gulf nation is Brazil’s second-largest trading partner in the Middle East, according to official WAM news agency.
The trade turnover between the two countries, excluding oil products, in 2022 amounted to more than four billion dollars (3.6 billion euros), which is 32% more than in the previous year.
The two countries signed on Saturday a series of agreements to combat climate change and biofuels.
