New York Mayor Eric Adams appointed Kathleen Corradi as the Rat King of the City, April 12. The official position is director of rodent control throughout the city with a salary of about 140,000 euros per year (about 12,000 euros per month).
New Yorkers have been fighting rodents for years, and Adams even declared that they needed a king to reduce the number of rats in the city.
According to US news site gothamist, Corradi will work closely with various departments, such as sanitation and health, to address the rodent problem and reduce the rodent population in New York City.
One of the first policies it will implement is to impose fines on those who leave rubbish on the street for long periods of time.
“I have a long history with rats. Rats are a symptom of problems in the system such as sanitation, healthcare, housing and economic justice,” Corradi said at a press conference where she was announced for the role. “They will see me often and much less rats,” he added.
“Rats affect how people feel in the city they are in, so we take it seriously,” said Eric Adams.
