The United States accused Lula da Silva of “repeating Russian and Chinese propaganda without looking at the facts.” We are talking about the recent comments of the President of Brazil, who accused the West of “encouraging” the war by supplying weapons to Ukraine. Lula also said that the US should stop supplying arms to Ukraine and the EU should “start talking about peace.”
U.S. Security Council spokesman John Kirby called the comments “inappropriate” and said they were off target, “implying that the US and Europe may somehow not be interested in peace, or that they share responsibility for the war.”
The US reaction comes as Russian MNE Sergei Lavrov is visiting Brazil, where he thanked Brazil for its efforts to end the conflict. “We are grateful to our Brazilian friends for a clear understanding of the genesis of the situation,” Lavrov said.
Lula’s peace plan, which involves the creation of a group of countries not involved in the conflict to mediate the negotiations, was praised by the Kremlin, which considered Lula’s mediation efforts “deserving of attention.” Lula said he discussed his peace plan with China and the United Arab Emirates.
