The Pakistani government is going to change the 1952 army law, but the amendments will not be “substantial,” Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said on November 17 in an interview with Geo News.
“The government is not considering significant changes to this law. The Supreme Court requested a review of the pertinent points in its judgment no. 39/2019, which must be carried out in due course.”said the minister.
He stressed that the hype in the media around the adopted amendments is “unreasonable”.
Recall, it was previously reported that the Pakistani government is considering amendments to the army law, which strengthen the powers of the prime minister in managing the army. The head of government should have the right to extend the powers of officers and commanders “through a simple notification, instead of going through a complex constitutional process”as well as establish rules for the extension or retirement of commanders and officers.
This amendment has already received the formal approval of the army command, as well as the Ministry of Defense, therefore it will be presented again to Parliament for legislative approval.
It should be noted that Pakistan’s opposition leader, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who previously attached great importance to the procedure for appointing a new Chief of Staff of the Land Forces (NCSHS), unexpectedly announced that he was giving the green light to the government in solving this problem, and his party, the Justice Movement” will evaluate this process “through the fingers”.
The current NSSV, General Qamar Jawed Bajwa, will retire on November 29. Currently, the general is on a “farewell tour”, attending various events and holding meetings with politicians and commanders from other countries.
