German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz this Wednesday praised PS General Secretary António Costa’s “progressive” political leadership in Portugal and the results of the Portuguese economy, arguing that we are currently witnessing a reversal of the tides.
Olaf Scholz was one of the speakers at the PS 50th Anniversary Dinner at the Carlos López Pavilion in Lisbon, where he was present as leader of the German Social Democrats, the SPD, a party that was crucial in terms of support. for the founding of PS on 19 April 1973 in Bad Münstereifel, on the outskirts of Bonn.
The German chancellor began by praising António Coste for his reaction when he received an absolute majority in the early legislative elections in January 2022.
“He said that an absolute majority is not synonymous with absolute power. What an example of democratic leadership,” he commented, before addressing the first leader of the Portuguese Socialists, Mario Soares and former Foreign Minister Jaime Gama.
“They believed in what Portugal is today under the leadership of António Costa. We are witnessing a change in trends. The world of the 21st century will undoubtedly be multipolar, with the emergence or reemergence of new powers and, at the same time, the transition to a digital and climate neutral world. We have nothing to fear if we are ready to accept the future,” said Olaf Scholz.
The German Chancellor went on to praise Portugal’s economic results over the past few years, saying they are the result of “progressive political leadership.”
“The leadership of a country that looks to the future, that sees change not as a threat, but as an opportunity to improve things and grow. This premise that the future is open and that we can contribute to its improvement is what unites us as social democrats in Europe and the world,” he added.
In his speech, as he did a few hours ago at a press conference he gave in Sao Bento, the German Prime Minister condemned the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.
However, this time he also praised the actions of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
“We are indebted to António Guterres and his commitment to the initial lifting of the export blockade from Ukraine,” he said.
He concluded by quoting historic German Social Democrat leader Willy Brandt: “Our duty is to move from national selfishness to a domestic and global European policy that takes into account the responsibility to ensure that all people, wherever they are, behave with humanity and dignity.” ,
