The authorities said the transit of grains and other agricultural products through Poland, suspended by Warsaw for almost a week, was officially resumed this Friday.
Poland and other EU countries bordering Ukraine have imposed temporary bans on the export of Ukrainian grains after protests by farmers who complain about falling prices for domestic products.
Ukrainian grains destined for foreign countries in transit to the European Union after the traditional Black Sea export route was blocked by Russian forces after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
The transit through Poland of various foodstuffs, including sugar, meat, fruits and vegetables, was allowed from 02:00 (00:00 in Lisbon) after the entry into force of the government decree.
According to the new legislation, Ukrainian exporters cannot sell products during transit through Poland.
“We assume that the flow is rather weak, as long as there are no signs of queues,” the head of the Polish customs service, Bartosz Zbaraszczuk, told radio RMF24.
The first batch, which arrived in Poland this Friday, was transported by five trucks.
The cargo consisted of meat, eggs and wheat bound for Holland.
Poland on Saturday imposed a ban on the import and direct sale of Ukrainian food products, mainly grains, into the country.
The decision was made without consultation with the Kyiv government and the European Commission, drawing criticism.
After the start of the invasion, Ukrainian grains were stored in Poland, which led to lower prices for local products, demonstrations and the resignation of the Polish Minister of Agriculture.
Similar bans on Ukrainian goods were introduced by Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria.
Last Tuesday, Kyiv announced an agreement to allow transit through Poland under control, which implies the use of electronic means and locators (GPS) in vehicles.
The customs authorities will also control the means of transport used.
“We let transport out of our sight only when it enters the port (…) or leaves the Polish border,” Zbarashchuk said.
