A third of German companies have become victims of economic crime in the last two years, citing a source from the audit firm KPMG, reports the German magazine Spiegel on April 22.
According to data provided by a representative survey carried out every two years, 34% of German companies have experienced economic crime in the last two years.
The last time such a high number was recorded was in 2014. Criminals attacked companies from both within and without.
The main departments that are subject to attack by criminals are the sales and information technology departments. According to the authors of the report, the reason for this is the not very high level of information security of remote work since “home Office”. Companies suddenly had to be digitized, there had to be “digital trust”said criminologist Alexander Geshonek of an auditing firm.
The most frequent crimes committed against German companies were data theft and abuse of access to information, copyright infringement and fraud. They were followed by banal embezzlement, ordinary theft and classic bribery. And only after all this does the list mention money laundering, cartel violations and manipulation of financial statements.
