PKP General Secretary Paulo Raimundo said this Sunday that April 25, 1974 “was for everyone”, but “not for everyone”, especially “for those who seek to clear the image of fascism” in Portugal.
Paulo Raimundo spoke at the end of the April 25 dinner in Loures, a district of Lisbon, in a speech in which he believed that “it is important to know and communicate what fascism is” because “there is no shortage of those who try to erase it who are trying to distort and even sugarcoat it in an intense process of rewriting history.”
Without naming anyone, the general secretary of the PKP stated that “some never tire of attacking and trying to condition” the popular celebration of the Carnation Revolution, “this has been the case in the past, and this year is no exception.”
“They mistreat democracy, they mistreat a sovereign country with its own voice, they mistreat those who defend the cause of peace, and above all, and this is a big problem, they mistreat and mistreat the April Revolution, its conquests. and her values, they don’t do well with Abril, that’s the problem, that’s the big problem,” he added.
Paulo Raimundo stressed that “April was not an evolution or a transition, as some would like it to be – April was a military uprising followed by a popular uprising, a revolutionary process that revolutionized the social and economic structures” of Portugal.
The PKP Secretary General also stressed that “it was the April Revolution that put an end to the colonial war and recognized the right to self-determination and independence of the peoples of the former colonies.”
“April was for everyone, but April was not for everyone. April is not for those who never wanted it, April is not for those who attack and attack it, April is not for those who commit and strive so that April does not come true” April is not and cannot be one of those who seek to clear the image of fascism in our country,” he defended.
He countered that on April 25 “for the progressive military, for the democrats, and for all those who pushed forward and conquest, conquest by hand, in the streets and in companies.”
“April 25 belongs to all its builders. And such is its strength and such is the validity of its plan, such is the depth of its conquests, which successive decades of counter-revolution and right-wing politics have not yet reached and will not achieve. can put an end to the April project,” he said.
Paulo Raimundo called on the communists to fill Avenida da Liberdade on 25 April, showing “that the values and the April project are alive, very much alive” and to make 1 May a “great day of struggle” and “demands for higher wages, greater rights, a moment to fight with exploitation and against the brutal rise in the cost of living.”
