Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service announced on Tuesday that a 40-year-old man was arrested for possession of a leopard skin and skull.
“This person was caught red-handed on April 22, 2023,” said Alfeu Sitoe, a spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) in Beira, in the center of the country, at a press conference in the city of Beira.
The suspect claimed to have received the goods from a friend, who is currently on the run, who intended to sell it to a foreigner in the Alto da Manga area of the city of Beira for a price of 60,000 meticai (856 euros).
According to Shitoe, the suspect has been committing this type of crime for years, even selling goods of the same nature to foreign nationals.
“Now he will be prosecuted and efforts are underway to find this unknown friend,” the police spokesman concluded.
In Mozambique, it is illegal to hunt a leopard for its skin.
