South Korea and the United States signed 23 initial agreements to boost bilateral cooperation in advanced industries and energy fields such as batteries, robots and nuclear power generation, the Yonhap news agency reported on April 26.
Memorandums of understanding (MOUs) were signed in Washington with 45 corporate officials from the two countries on the sidelines of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s state visit to the US, according to the Seoul Department of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
Of the agreements, 10 dealt with batteries, biotechnology, aviation, robots, autonomous driving and other next-generation sectors, while the remaining 13 MoUs called for greater bilateral ties in the energy industries, including hydrogen, nuclear and carbon neutrality.
Participating South Korean companies include Doosan Co., SK Inc., Lotte Chemical Corp. and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. On the US side, Boeing, GE, ExxonMobil and Siemens participated in the event, the ministry said.
In particular, the Korea Battery Industry Association in Seoul and several other organizations signed a memorandum of understanding with the American NATTBatt and agreed to conduct joint research and development on secondary batteries and promote the exchange of technology and personnel.
Doosan and Doosan Robotics Inc. have pledged to strengthen ties with American company Rockwell Automation in the field of technology development and marketing for smart factory operations.
The South Korean companies Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. and SK Innovation Co. signed an agreement with the American company TerraPower, dedicated to nuclear design, to jointly promote the project for the construction and operation of fourth-generation small modular reactors.
In the clean energy sector, Korea Electric Power Corp. and GE have agreed to work more closely to develop technologies for hydrogen, ammonia and other renewable energy sources.
“The alliance between South Korea and the United States has gone beyond the traditional military and security alliance to become a technological alliance.Industry Minister Lee Chang Yang said. — We hope that these agreements will bring great results and that the South Korean government will actively support corporate activities.”.
