Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday passed a law granting war veteran and disabled status to militants from four annexed regions of Ukraine, including members of the Wagner paramilitary group.
According to the law, the category of veterans and invalids of military operations includes those who “concluded a contract with organizations that help the Russian Armed Forces in carrying out tasks” during the military campaign.
From the point of view of Yaroslav Nilov, head of the Working Committee on Social Policy and Veterans Affairs of the State Duma (lower house of parliament), these include private military companies such as Wagner, whose personnel are currently fighting in the city of Bakhmut, in the Donetsk region (Eastern Ukraine).
