Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands is a major transit port for criminal organizations shipping jaguar products from Suriname to China, wildlife organizations said, the NL Times reported on April 29.
Big cats are increasingly hunted in South America for their teeth, bones and other body parts, according to Earth League International (ELI), a civil society organization that fights the illegal pet trade.
The organization pointed out that the Dutch airport is not sufficiently controlled. Baggage is transferred from one plane to another without first going through a scanner. Two wildlife organizations recently identified 75 people involved in the trade in jaguar products and found Schiphol Airport’s role in them.
However, according to airport officials, all luggage from Suriname is being scanned.
