A 78-year-old man was arrested for a wildfire-related crime in Vila Real, bringing the number of arrests at the scene for the same crime committed by GNR in 2023 to 10, it was announced on Tuesday.
A statement from the territorial office of Vila Real said that a resident in his seventies was arrested by the Service for the Protection of Nature and the Environment (SEPNA) for a forest fire in the municipality of Vila Real.
The security guard also explained that after the alarm, SEPNA officers went to the site, where they found that the fire “started from the authorized burning of the remains of the forest, which went out of control, causing a fire that engulfed about 0.02 hectares of bush.”
According to the GNR, the suspect was charged with interrogation and the facts were turned over to the Judicial Court of Vila Real.
The Vila Real Territorial Command also said that since the beginning of 2023, it has already identified 23 suspected forest fires, 10 of whom were detained at the scene of the crime.
In 2022, Vila Real GNR identified and arrested a total of 46 bushfire suspects.
GNR has confirmed that arson is one of the main causes of fires in Portugal, that incineration, landfill and campfire burning is prohibited whenever there is a “very high” or “maximum” level of fire danger in the countryside”, depending on permit or prior authorization . communication at other times.
