Five people were injured Tuesday when a runaway taxi collided with six cars in downtown Coimbra. The taxi driver and client, aged 46 and 37 respectively, are in serious condition. Other casualties with minor injuries are two women aged 75 and 53 and a 51-year-old man.
The accident happened on the way down Avenida Elisio de Moura, next to the PSP in Coimbra. The taxi continued to honk to alert other drivers who were traveling on both roads in the same direction, but the six vehicles could not be avoided. Two cars overturned.
30 firefighters and volunteers from Coimbra, the Portuguese Red Cross, INEM and PSP were involved in helping the victims.
